Martin Dunford OBE

Chief Executive, Skills Training UK & Chairman, AELP

Martin is the Chairman of AELP and Chief Executive of Skills Training UK. His company Skills Training UK is a Prime Contractor to the Department of Work & Pensions (DWP), the Education Funding Agency (EFA) delivering the Study Programme and the Youth Contract for 16 -17 year old NEETS and to the Skills Funding Agency (SFA) for Apprenticeships and Traineeships. Martin has been involved in the promotion and delivery of vocational education and skills and Apprenticeships for over twenty years. Martin was a founding member of AELP and has been elected as its Chairman for each of the last ten years. In addition, Martin was a member of the End to End Review of Modern Apprenticeships, on the Advisory Panel to the Foster Review of Further Education and a Board member of both the Learning and Skills Development Agency (LSDA) and the Quality Improvement Agency (QIA). He was also a long standing member of both the Further Education & Skills Ministerial Advisory Panel and the Apprenticeship Ambassador’s Network. Martin was awarded an OBE in the 2010 New Year’s Honours list for services to skills training.

Stewart Segal

Chief Executive, AELP

Stewart Segal was appointed to the role of Chief Executive Officer of AELP in 2013. Stewart has worked in the funded work based learning sector for over 20 years and in particular has supported AELP since its formation. Stewart worked as an independent consultant within the training sector, working with a number of training providers and colleges specialising in business development and funding issues.

Following a background in HR and general management in the private sector Stewart joined Hertfordshire Training and Enterprise Council in 1994 as Chief Executive until 1998 when Stewart joined Spring Skills as Chief Executive in 1998. Spring Skills was then the largest independent training provider in the sector involved in the delivery of a range of programmes in the service sectors such as retail, customer services, hospitality and business administration.

Dr Ann Limb CBE DL

Chair, SEMLEP

Dr Ann Limb CBE DL is a business leader and social entrepreneur and is Chair of the South East Midlands Local Enterprise Partnership (SEMLEP)

After a 25-year career in Further Education, as a lecturer and then College Principal in Milton Keynes and Cambridge, Ann was responsible, technically at senior civil servant level, for the UK government’s flagship digital learning initiative, learndirect and the national e-services programmes Direct Gov and UK online. Moving to the private sector in 2005, Ann worked as a government adviser in the UK and overseas; she was involved with the Departments for Education and Business Innovation & Skills in the setting up the TUC’s online learning service unionlearn and advised on the creation of on line citizens services in a range of overseas locations.

Ann now holds a number of public and private sector non-executive directorships, including at the HCA where she was appointed in 2011. From 2005 – 2011, Ann served as Chair of Milton Keynes Partnership, a successor body to the Development Corporation that established the new town in 1967. In one role or another, she has therefore been associated with housing delivery in Milton Keynes for a decade.

Ann is also Chair of Destination Milton Keynes – the city’s official tourism and visitor information service and Chair of the MK Major Events Board, with overall responsibility for delivery in the city of the Rugby World Cup 2015. As a Trustee of the Stables Theatre, Ann also chairs IF, the biennial Milton Keynes International Festival.

Ann is chair of a major national educational charity - the Helena Kennedy Foundation, which she founded in 1998 to promote social inclusion in further and higher education by awarding bursaries to students from disadvantaged backgrounds. In September 2015, Ann will formally take up the post of Chair of The Scout Association - the UK’s largest youth engagement and volunteering charity. Ann will be The Scouts Association’s first ever woman Chair.

Ann is Deputy Lieutenant of the county of Buckinghamshire, where she has lived since 1986. 

Jason Holt CBE

Chief Executive, Holts Group

Jason Holt is CEO of the Holts Group and founder of Holts Academy, employing about 100 people.

Holder of the Queens Award for Enterprise Promotion and a Freeman and Liveryman of the City of London and Goldsmiths Company Jason, in October 2014, received the Enterprise Policy Influencer of the Year Award. Most recently, in January 2015, Jason was awarded the honour of Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in the New Years Honours List, for his services to the jewellery sector and apprenticeships.

Jason is the author of the Government Review on ‘Making Apprenticeships More Accessible to SME’s. His recommendations in his review have resulted in changed policy and greater ease in recruiting apprentices. He was subsequently appointed by the Minister for Skills as the Government Apprenticeship Ambassador for Small Business. Jason recently chaired the Craft Trailblazer which represents all areas of craft in the UK.   

Dr Lynne Sedgmore CBE

Executive Director, 157 Group of Colleges

Lynne is Executive Director of the 157 Group of large urban FE Vocational Colleges. She works closely with Ministers and senior civil servants to develop and implement effective skills and education policies for the UK vocational skills system.

She was a member of the Prime Minister’s UK wide national review of public sector leadership 2009/10 and worked with the 11 National UK Leadership Academies. Lynne has chaired and sat on numerous national and Ministerial public sector committees and advisory groups.

Lynne has worked/lectured in over 15 countries on developing leadership, marketing and vocational skills, including America, Africa, India, China, New Zealand, Europe - and the United Nations.

Her previous roles include Chief Executive of the Centre for Excellence in Leadership (CEL) and Principal of Guildford College of Further and Higher Education and Head of Croydon Business School.

Her organisations have won a range of awards including BT Vision, corporate social responsibility and CEL was the first educational organisation to win the British Diversity award and the International Spirituality at Work Award.

Lynne is an experienced board member and has held 15 non-executive posts since 1984 including Vice-Chair of Croydon Health Authority, Chair of the UK Interfaith Seminary, the Anne Frank Trust UK and Servant Leadership UK.

Lynne achieved her Prof Doc in 2014 and has an MSc in Change Agent Skills and Strategies. She was awarded the CBE in 2004 for services to Further Education and was named one of the Debrett's 500 most influential people in the UK in 2015. Lynne is a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and a fellow of the Institute of Directors.

She is currently an Honorary Senior Research Associate for the Institute of Education within University College London and was a Council member and Senior Fellow of Surrey University for 6 years. She has had several articles published on leadership, emotional intelligence, and spirituality in the workplace; as well as several books and articles written about her leadership.

Lynne has three daughters, 2 grand-daughters and is a published poet.

Tom Bewick

Co-founder and CEO, International Skills Standards Organisation (INSSO)

Tom Bewick is the co-founder and CEO at INSSO. He has spent most of his career working in skills, employment and entrepreneurship education advising governments and corporations on successful workforce development strategies. As the founder CEO, he set up, from scratch, the industry training council for the creative and cultural industries (2004-2010), with the inaugural chair, Lord Hall of Birkenhead (Tony Hall), director-general of the BBC. This included securing funding and planning approval for a state of the art national skills academy in Thurrock and the introduction of creative apprenticeships.

These days, Tom is an expert on globalisation, migration, labour market policies, economics, education management and apprenticeships. He can be found working in many parts of the world – in China, America, India, North Africa and the Middle East – advising clients on a variety of education and labour market reforms. An active trustee, he serves on the boards of Future Brilliance Foundation, Afghanistan organisation. Tom was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 1999, and holds both a BSc. (Hons) and MSc. from the University of Bath and Ljubljana University, Slovenia.

Derrick Betts

Specialist, UKTI Education

Derrick Betts is a specialist within the government run team of UKTI Education which helps UK education and training organisations win high value education opportunities overseas.

Derrick joined UKTI Education after a career working in the global education practice of The Parthenon Group where he advised investors, corporations and government bodies on a range of strategic issues across all education sectors.

Derrick’s main areas of focus within UKTI Education has included education and training opportunities in the Gulf, including the Colleges of Excellence programme in Saudi Arabia.

Jack Sawyer

Chief Executive Officer, Ingeus UK

Jack was appointed Chief Executive Officer in January 2015 and is responsible for all of Ingeus’s work across the UK including Employment programmes, Skills training, Probation services and the National Citizen Service.
 
With extensive experience in the delivery of large-scale programmes, Jack has held a number of senior operational posts across the private and not-for-profit sectors. Prior to joining Ingeus, Jack worked for National Express Transport Group in a number of operational roles and for the Notting Hill Housing Group as Head of Customer Services.

Jack has worked for Ingeus since 2004 and was Chief Operating Officer between 2012 to 2014. He has also been board member of ERSA, Employment Related Services Association, since 2013.

Professor Bill Lucas

Centre for Real-World Learning at the University of Winchester

Bill Lucas is Professor of Learning at the University of Winchester where he is Director of the Centre for Real-World Learning. With Professor Guy Claxton he is the creator of the Expansive Education Network, www.expansiveeducation.net. With AELP, 157 Group and City & Guilds he has played a significant role in creating the Alliance for Research into Vocational Education. Bill is in demand across the world as an entertaining and thought-provoking speaker and facilitator. Bill has written more than 40 books and numerous research reports including:

Mark Dawe

Chief Executive, OCR

Mark Dawe was appointed Chief Executive of OCR in 2010. He is currently a governor of Sawston Village College and vice chair of Stapleford Community Primary School. He is also a member of the Business in the Community Education Leadership Group. Previously he has been a corporation member of Lewisham College as well as being on a variety of National Boards and a Trustee of VTCT. Mark was Principal and Chief Executive of Oaklands College in Hertfordshire. He has a wealth of experience across a broad spectrum in the education field. Prior to his role at Oaklands College, Mark was Deputy Director, FE Strategy at the Department of Education and Skills having joined as Deputy Director, Adult Basic Skills Strategy Unit in 2003. After qualifying as a Chartered Accountant, Mark joined Canterbury College, becoming Head of Corporate Services in 1994. In 2000, he helped set up eGS, an e-procurement provider to the public sector. In his spare time he is a scout leader, cycles and supports Plymouth Argyle!
